Is it safe to take herbal medicine while undergoing fertility treatments?

The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness provides the professional guidance of a board-certified herbalist to ensure all of your herbal formulas are customized to your specific needs. They will complement rather than countermand your fertility treatments. Herbal medicine supports Western medicine naturally and works with your reproductive endocrinologist-prescribed medications. Herbs are safe and present with no side effects.

What can I expect from your consultation?

Your consultation will last between an hour and a half to two hours. During the consultation, we will conduct an in-depth review of your general and reproductive health and learn more about the barriers you face while trying to conceive. We will discuss herbal medicine, acupuncture, and low-level light therapy. We will devise a treatment plan that meets your needs and wishes. All of your questions will be answered. After the consult is completed, you will receive your first acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture is safe, painless, and effective.

Mike Berkley, LAc, FABORM

Mike is a licensed and board certified acupuncturist as well as a board certified herbalist. He is a fertility specialist at The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness in the Midtown East neighborhood of Manhattan, New York.

My wife and I wanted to start a family. We tried, and we failed repeatedly. I was not an acupuncturist then and had no understanding or belief in it. That did not hold much weight with my wife. We both underwent testing and found out that I had poor morphology and poor motility, and she had anti-sperm antibodies. Nancy saw an acupuncturist and herbalist, who also convinced me to go for treatment. Three months later, Nancy was pregnant. We now have a twenty-nine-year-old, healthy, happy, and successful son. This is when I became a believer. I decided to go to acupuncture school. I went for four years for acupuncture studies and then two more years to study herbal medicine. I knew from the first day at school that I wanted to specialize in treating others who were suffering from the terrible and challenging battle of infertility. I have spent the last twenty-seven years making my dream come true by helping my patient’s dreams come true. I am so grateful for the path I chose. A life dedicated to helping others has shown me a satisfaction I would have never known. I am thankful to my wife, and I am grateful to my patients.

This experience led Mike to obtain his degree in acupuncture from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine’s New York campus and his National Board Certification in herbal medicine. Equipped with the necessary license and fueled by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Mike studied Western medical approaches and the ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine about infertility treatment. Through rigorous study and invaluable clinical experience, he developed unique acupuncture protocols and proprietary herbal formulas, tailoring them to each individual or couple seeking his assistance.

I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. Mike Berkley. The decision to seek out his care has been a turning point in my fertility journey. I just feel better, like I have a doctor on my team. Before my conversations with Dr. Mike, I felt scared and anxious all the time. I was in agony and couldn’t walk after my booster shot for at least a year commitment I had this bizarre rash that would be bleeding when I woke up in the morning from scratching so much that no doctor could address or explain.I went the natural way called Mike Berkley, even though he specializes in infertility he is a healer.Right hand to God when I got off the table stopped itching and has not bothered me since and I was walking with almost no pain at all‼️Berkley gave me my life back. I wish I had known about the benefits of acupuncture when I first started my fertility journey. After an unsuccessful transfer, I did a deep search online and discovered a lot of women talking about acupuncture. After much research, I found the Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness and specifically gravitated here as they specialized only in fertility success. I was treated by Mike for pre-and post transfer sessions, as well as weekly sessions until I was Week 13. I am now in my 2nd trimester and miss my sessions with Mike. He is extremely knowledgeable in women’s reproductive health and has such a quirky personality, which I loved. I cannot say if acupuncture was the reason my 2nd transfer was a success, but it sure does not hurt especially while we are all hanging on to hope. If you are considering acupuncture, I highly recommend seeing Mike at the Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness!!!

In a world of infertility unknowns, the Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness was a welcomed constant. Mike is wonderful! My fertility doctor suggested acupuncture as a stress reliever, and acupuncture was something I could do in an unexplained infertility world I was living. I admit I was hesitant because I am not good at lying still without anything to entertain me, and meditation does not come easily for me. I soon learned to relax with Mike’s guidance and therapy. He became not just my acupuncturist but my therapist, coach and friend. I started working with Mike to increase my egg quality about two years ago. He is knowledgeable in fertility medicine, and I looked forward to our sessions. I have since “graduated” from acupuncture and can excitedly report I am in my 2nd trimester! I owe a lot to Mike!

I found Mike’s practice through his amazing Google reviews; and as such, I feel compelled to share my own. This is a long review, but I imagine that most of Mike’s clients, as I did, read all of his reviews before taking the steps to make an appointment. So, I wanted to share *all* about my amazing journey at the Berkley Center.I began seeing Mike in February of 2023. Having had previously favorable experiences with acupuncture, I wanted to do everything I could as we sought to have another child. Acupuncture is, of course, less invasive than many of the medical fertility procedures, so I really wanted to start here. As such, I wanted to see someone at the top of their game as a practitioner–and all of Mike’s reviews supported he was just that. And, I just wanted to be as efficient with my time as possible!Mike was extremely prompt in contacting me after my initial inquiry. He worked with my schedule; and, from the get-go, I was impressed with everything. His office is beautiful–wonderfully curated to make his clients feel as relaxed as possible. Truly, you feel like you’re in a spa! And, as a practitioner, Mike is skilled–for those on the fence about acupuncture, I assure you that with Mike, there is no discomfort at all. In fact, during many of my visits, I fell asleep.Now, I sought this practice to help me conceive. And after a few sessions (I think I had seen Mike three or four times at this point?), I thought that to be the most efficient with my time, I would see Mike while simultaneously seeing a Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE). I had my initial visit with my RE, and got the requisite bloodwork before beginning a possible journey of IUI. Well, I got a call later that day after my RE appointment that I was pregnant. So, I never actually needed to get IUI!I then continued seeing Mike, right through my 12 week mark (I think…maybe it was a few weeks more?). Of course, things were working so well that I wanted to do everything I could to ensure my pregnancy remained both viable and healthy. I asked Mike on more than one occasion if I could continue seeing him; and, this is where his character and honesty really shined. He said this wasn’t necessary, as research doesn’t support continued visits made an impact after this point of pregnancy. Here I was, willing to spend more money at his business, and he declined. I think that speaks volumes about Mike, who he is, and the kind of honest business he operates.Fast forward a few months, and I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy! I do not understand the nuances of the practice of acupuncture and Eastern medicine; but, I can indeed say that all it can do is help. And, I am so grateful to Mike that his work helped me grow my family! I cannot recommend him enough!

In a world where there is very little emphasis on quality of care and as patients feel nothing more than a a number, going to Mike has been a breath of fresh air. Mike views each person as unique, and treats them as such. He takes his time to thoroughly learn about his patients, and then customizes his care based on the patient. Our treatment plans

Initial Consult and Treatment: $250.00

After the consultation and first treatment, you can choose one of two ‘programs.’ if you purchase one of the programs, your initial consultation and acupuncture treatment fee are completely waived—it’s 100% free. Or you can opt to receive acupuncture treatments for $150.00 per treatment, and not opt in to one of our programs.

Program A

Twenty-six acupuncture visits for $2600.00. You will be scheduled for acupuncture treatment twice weekly until you become pregnant, and then you will be treated twice weekly for thirteen weeks to help you prevent miscarriage. Twenty-six visits are approximately three months of treatment. It takes three months for a tiny follicle to develop into a mature follicle. This is where we can shine and help improve your egg quality and increase your chances of getting pregnant. Each session is 30 minutes long.

Program B

Program B provides the most comprehensive approach to care. The cost of Program B is $2400.00. This program includes 12 acupuncture treatments and 12 low-level light therapy treatments. You’ll be treated three times weekly for four weeks. We will combine acupuncture and low-level light therapy at each session. Each treatment is 60 minutes long. This means that your cost for each session comes out to $200.00 per session, or, $100.00 for acupuncture and $100.00 for low-level light therapy.

Herbal Medicine

Investing in a customized herbal medicine formula designed specifically for you is another option. Herbal remedies are known for their remarkable effectiveness and complete safety. The cost of herbs varies depending on the formula written.

Acupuncture Pre and Post-Embryo Transfer Only

If you only want to receive acupuncture pre and post-embryo transfer, this service is available without investing in one of our Plans. The cost for each visit is $150.00. We are available seven days per week at any time to provide this service in Manhattan, New York City.

National and international phone consultations

These are available for $350.00. The consultation allows us to provide your acupuncturist with the proper prescription for acupuncture points. We can also create a customized herbal medicine formula designed specifically for you.

Home visits

Service is king! If you would prefer to have a specialist treat you at home, we are pleased to accommodate you. We travel anywhere in Manhattan and all the boroughs. You provide Uber there and back, and we’ll be there. Each visit is $300.00.

The Postpartum Program

Acupuncture Package: 10 Visits for $2,000

Acupuncture and herbal medicine can provide significant relief for postpartum symptoms. Acupuncture helps by promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and balancing hormones, which can alleviate mood swings and anxiety. It also improves blood flow and energy levels, helping to combat fatigue and physical discomfort. Herbal medicine, customized to each individual’s needs, can support hormonal balance, boost energy, and improve sleep quality. Together, these treatments offer a holistic approach to recovery, helping new mothers regain their strength and emotional stability during the postpartum period.

How Does Herbal Medicine Work to Improve Fertility?

Acupuncture stimulates blood flow to the ovaries, lining, and testes, increasing and improving the delivery of oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and electrolytes to these target tissues, enhancing their quality. You will receive acupuncture treatments twice weekly at The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness. Herbal medicine does what acupuncture does, but more. Herbs reduce that which is in excess (weight, androgens, stress, spasmed fallopian tubes) and support that which is deficient (egg quality, lining quality, sperm quality). While you’re receiving acupuncture treatment twice weekly, you will take herbs seven days per week. So, you’re getting treated from the outside in (acupuncture) and from the inside out (herbs). With the addition of herbal medicine to your treatment protocol, you are engaging in a comprehensive approach to family building.

Is Chinese Herbal Medicine Used Alone or in Conjunction With Acupuncture?

We offer three modalities for improving full-term pregnancy outcomes. These are acupuncture, customized herbal medicine, and low-level light therapy. Our clinic’s patients use one, two, or all three of these interventions. During our consultation, we can determine the best treatment plan for you.

Are There Any Side Effects of Using Herbal Medicine for Fertility?

No. Herbs are totally safe and very effective. Whoever prescribes your herbs should be board certified in herbal medicine from an accredited school.
